Big Read Photojournalism and Oral History Projects Open for Submissions

Two exciting community projects held in conjunction with the Big Read are now open to youth, amateurs and professionals. The St. Croix River Valley Big Read program will feature Thornton Wilder’s literature of Our Town and The Bridge of San Luis Rey during February 2010. The photos and oral histories gathered through these projects, featuring the St. Croix River Valley, will feature the St. Croix River Valley in events, displays and presentations during the Big Read program.

"Capture Our Town" Photojournalism Project aims to capture images from the more than 80 municipalities, townships and unincorporated hamlets that exist across the Big Read area of Polk, Burnett (WI) and Chisago (MN) counties. We invite all area youth, amateur and professional photographers to submit such digital images as bridges, main streets, cemeteries, gathering spaces, churches, mailboxes or places of work and industry. Photos must be taken starting June 23 to December 31, 2009 and will contribute the "Capture Our Town" Photojournalism Exhibit event, which will open at the Big Read kick-off event on February 27, 2010. Digital slideshows of submissions will be distributed for viewing at local libraries, schools and historical society museums.

"Your Town, A Living History" Project is designed to gather stories through conversations with senior citizens that occurred in the St. Croix Valley in the past. We invite all historians--youth and community members--throughout Polk, Burnett and Chisago counties to record (video or audio) or transcribed. These accounts will be used to create Readers theatre pieces that will be performed at the "Life of the Village" Big Read event at Festival Theatre on March 14, 2010.

A "Literature to the Stage" Workshop is offered for educators and community members to provide tips on collecting oral histories, effectively managing material and using drama and oral interpretation to make any classroom topic exceptionally fun and effective. WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

You're already experiencing the Law of Attraction, with jobs, money, relationships and happiness in your life. Are you satisfied with the results? Chronic thoughts you hold in your mind tend to become your experiences. What you think becomes your belief, which becomes your perception of life, which then becomes your experience. This mind-and-heart-opening class teaches you the “Secret” of how to stop attracting things you don't want and start attracting things you do want. It will gently lead you through the steps of directing your thoughts to bring energy, joy and prosperity into your life.
Course Fee: $50.00

LETTING GO OF DETRIMENTAL THINKING

The human mind is capable of astounding accomplishments when at peace and uncluttered. Unfortunately, a very small percentage of us reach that potential, primarily because the mind is engaged in trivial, demoralizing, ego-centric thinking. Concentration and well being can’t be attained when the mind is preoccupied with living either in the future, or in the past. Fear, guilt, worry, and revenge are born from a distorted perception of reality and results in needless suffering. This class provides tools and insight into how to control and focus your thoughts to identify when you are engaged in non-productive thoughts and how to achieve a calm, self-confident state.

This course will prove attractive to people seeking insights about living happier and more productive lives, and has universal appeal for people who are caught up in stressful roles and are experiencing mental strains and suffering.

Typically Americans never examine the thoughts they experience during an ordinary day. Yet most thoughts are unproductive and redundant. Very often we wander through each day with our mind in over-drive, ruminating about what happened yesterday or trying to predict the future with empty promises like “I’ll be happy when!” This mind-and-heart-opening class teaches participants how to: Identify which thoughts are totally unnecessary and harmful; Let go of unwanted thoughts such as fear, anger, and worry; Create calmness and self-confident thoughts. Complete the lessons on your timetable.
Course Fee: $55.00

CONFRONTING FINANCIAL FEAR AND WORRY

Are the wheels starting to come off your emotions due to financial worries? A sudden financial setback causes anxiety, stress, loss of sleep, lack of focus and concentration, and in extreme cases, even clinical depression. The human mind is capable of astounding accomplishments when free of clutter and at peace. However, when the mind is preoccupied with financial fears and worries, your mental performance plummets. Fortunately, learning simple techniques can ease your suffering and help you cope. This class provides tools and insights into how to control and focus your thoughts to bring some normalcy to your life. This course will appeal for people caught up in the emotional roller coaster resulting from the current economic events.

Uncertainty about the future plagues the entire globe. Every American family that owns a home has taken a financial hit recently. Retirement funds have shrunk by 30%; unemployment is at record levels and threatens to go higher. Remaining emotionally balanced and at peace in these times requires a new set of coping skills. This mind-and-heart-opening class teaches participants how to:
-Break the cycle of the repetitive inner voice of worry
-Learn how to filter the real news from media fear mongering
-Let go of fear in order to achieve inner serenity
Course Fee $65.00
